Response to Advent Speculation

We may not be able to respond to all the speculation about Advent on the forums, but we are certainly aware of it and we'd like to take the opportunity to address a few outstanding questions.

First, I'd like to confirm that our next project is NOT the second installment of the Advent trilogy or anything related to Advent. We are currently working on a completely new franchise, which you'll hear more about later.

Second, although our Core Design Team is comprised of several key members of the Advent team, we currently do not own the rights to the franchise (Majesco owns the IP) so we don't have the ability to continue the series at this time.

Lastly, I love Advent. We all LOVE Advent. It was designed as a trilogy and it's an incredible story. I will always remain committed to the franchise and would be happy to finish the series if the opportunity presented itself. For now, we've got much bigger things in store for you.

We're moving in a new and very exciting direction, a direction that we control. We'll keep you as up-to-date as possible and hope you'll continue to always let us know your thoughts.

I hate this.

Guys (and by guys, I mean the mustard bros) I'm new here and I really hate whats happened. I wish there was something I could do. I loved AR and I know ya'll did too. After all, it was your baby. I know ya'll are tired of seeing these messages about how heartbroken we are but I just wanted to say, AR rocks. You really hit the nail on the head with all that you were trying to do with the game. Storyline, graphics, VO casting, the score... Everything was awesome. Don't let me forget the gameplay, its phenomenal as well. Since I've been a serious, hardcore gamer for the better part of a decade, I feel confident in myself when I say that AR would, and hopefully will still be an epic of... well, epic proportions. Like I said in Majesco's forum, having to stop it now would be like George Lucas giving up on Star Wars after A New Hope. But I'm not blaming you guys, from what little I've been able to gather, there was nothing you could do. If there's anything at all that I can do to help, send me an email. That address is, X3R022@gmail.com. Or you can just drop me a line anyway just to show that you care. LoL

to be quite honest, I wouldn't care if you guys just finished the series via a book or two. I loved the story and thats what I fell in love with. If you guys really "love" it, finish it, I understand you don't hold the rights to it, however, it would be a completely different story to present to them the completion of the project as a book rather then a video game, clearly the costs would be tremendously lower. Because the player base is indeed small, save the money and offer the book in pdf format. Might cost you a coupl'a thousands to get the book written but you could easily cover that with selling the pdf for a few bucks. I dont know what your sales were like for the game so of course this is all just theory...but you guys say you really love it, if you really love it finish what you started in some way, you left so many people with a cliffhanger and to let such a beautiful story go untold is simply a shame.

I agree with genoism about not finishing Advent's story to be a shame, though if there were a choise I'd choose it to end with two more video games. While I enjoy reading a good book, games with stories such as Advent just gotta be told through video games. That's just how I feel.

Get some back up for the next advent game

Hey i'm not sure but if you guys really want to get the next advent game rolling, u could get some backup by doing the whole myspace thing. I've seen a bunch of things take off that started on myspace. Bands, movies, just stuff like that, so if you want to get the name out there, and maybe find some people to back it maybe that'd work. Not for sure though just an idea, cause i'd really like to see the series continue. Well, i'm out. Peace.

MySpace is lame.

Well its nice to know why the Advent "trilogy" isn't going to happen......yet. Advent Rising was honestly a renter for me initially because i didnt know if it was going to be a good game or not. It seriously turned out to be one of the greatest games I've ever played, especially with respect to the story line. The game mechanics could have been better in some respects, but the character building and storyline just hooked me. I, like everyone else, would love for the trilogy to actually happen some day, but I'm really looking forward to what CH4IR has in store in the future. You've already proven what you can do. And thank God for Orson right!

Well, I just hope that Advent Trilogy is going to be finished. Peace

But what about Advent Shadow, the game for the PSP?

I think they're gonna let that one slide.

Just tossing numbers around here, but any idea how much the Advent license is worth to Majesco? How much would it take them to let go of the license so that a development team could pick it up and make the sequel it so deserves? Just curious mind you.

Good question, I was wondering the same thing.

Who knows? What would be considered standart price? It would also depend on wether Majesco is going through some financial problems. I know they suffered some really bad luck around the time AR was released, some other game also barely sold, despite getting good reviews, can't remember the game's name, though. Dunno if they are still hurting or if things have gone worse or better. Has anyone heard whats going on with them?

Anyway, I have absolude confidence that someday Chair will buy back the rights from Majesco. After making couple of hundred million dollars, to be sure.

The other game that underachieved was Tim Schafers Psychonauts, which was an equally enjoyable game, but sold unspectacularily. (The point of this lesson is to never use Majesco as a publisher.) The lacking sales of this and Advent were the reason why Majesco acted so drastically in the first place. The only difference is that Tim Schafer and Double Fine Studios weren't ousted like Glyphyx and the Mustard Bros. (Though Tim Schafer recently announced he's taking his dev team to Vivendi studious is working on an as-of-now unconfirmed original IP.

As far as Majesco is concerned, they're deep in the hole. Slated console games like Demonik were cancelled because of financial issues. At the moment, Majesco is staying exclusive to making handheld games for GBA:SP, NDS, and PSP, which they're doing strong in; However, at E3 they announced a growing desire to develop titles for the Nintendo Wii as well. No games are currently slated for launch on the Wii, so we're still unsure whether Majesco is out of their financial hole yet or not.

ChAIR doesn't necessarily have to buy it back though. Wouldn't it be a great present for Donald to wake up on Christmas morning and find out somebody has gone ahead and bought the license back for them. All the fans of the series gathering donations to buy back the license so that we might recieve our sequel would be well worth it I believe. And considering the money it will take to first get the license and second develop and produce the game, it would cut back greatly on the expenses and more resources could go into actually making the game.

A fine suggestion, but we need to remember two things.

One, how realistic is it that a few hundred fans can raise a few million dollars to buy back the IP?
Two, wouldn't it reflect badly on ChAIR if their fans had to buy back their own license for them?

I say, let the Mustard brothers handle it. They know what they're doing, so I'll trust they'll do what they can to finish the trilogy.

1. understandable. I never said it was likely, but if you find a wealthy beneficiary (like a fan that won the lottery for example) willing to pay for it, it'd be possible. But I see what you're getting at. A lottery winner paying to get a license isn't likely to happen unless he intends on starting up his own development team (I want to, but I don't have that kind of money.)

2. Not really. If we bought ChAIR their license it would only succeed in showing everyone else how devoted to the series we are and show our understanding of how important the series is the the Mustard Bros and how badly Majesco screwed them over. Buying the license would be a good example for the business to show what we want in our games and so on.
